My apocalyptic swamps are littered with neon garbage, mutated animals, and corpse-like nymphs - a Babelification of Baroque figures making for imagery that can be read as initially provocative, or even pastiche. The slow visual rotting of Beauty is metastasized into a fecund slick of abstract marks of glimmering paint. I seek to create plastic surfaces that extend the mystery of traditional realist technique into an uncanny valley of psychedelic pentimenti and optical succulence.
The mimesis of appropriated Old Masters such as Boucher and Rubens are a nod to the parasitic and parasympathetic relationship of contemporary pop surrealism with the euro-centric Western canon. The paintings pivot between objects of desire and dis-ease, like all good Southern Gothic stories.
I use color as a symbolic tool to occlude original meanings and lick at the viewer’s psyche, decapitating the old masterful techniques from their original austere compositions into a cluttered psychedelic swamp. - EE
Idle Warship
As a graduate student at the University of Georgia, I drew upon my experiences as an educational counselor to create artwork that would investigate contemporary idol worship, and its implications, as seen in society.
The core of this exhibition My current body of work, which I call Idle Warship, is a focused juxtaposition of Yorùbá and Voudun deities against common secular and sacred phrases/imagery associated with Christianity, Pop culture, and Art history. These works are my contemplation of the topics of idol worship, politics, religion, violence, race, representation, the chasm between information and knowledge, and the places where these things intersect. The heart of this work manifested as faux-stained glass window pieces, and contemporized church fans and national flags. It is the possibility of the church fan to be used as an instrument of education, while aiding in meditation and supplication, which has most intrigued me, while the flags are considered as political idols rooted in sacred and secular iconography.
This work deals with issues pertinent to the socialization, intellectual, and spiritual growth of individuals globally – not just in American society. It is the possibility of such dialogues that interest me both as an artist and educator.

Help Us Rebuild
On March 9th, lightning struck the Steeple of our Gallery 1901. The fire raced through the attic. The damage to our 125 year old building is extensive. We are raising funds to help us restore it so that it can once again serve the artists and community of Ponchatoula.
