Poetry With Akilah Toney
Akilah Toney is a published writer, spoken word artist, dancer, teaching artist, and digital creator from New Orleans, LA. From the beginning of her journey in the study of writing and dancing at age ten, Akilah investigates rhythm and word as sacred forms of communication that shape our human experiences and ultimately transform us. Through this, Akilah calls upon her own identity and the histories of her Southern foremothers as praxis in her search for sacred rhythm. With a background in Psychology, Akilah prioritizes the intersection of wellness and arts for inter-generational Black, Brown, and Queer communities in order to nourish alternative modalities for community healing and flourishing.
At age fourteen, Akilah accepted a Scholastic Gold Key award at Carnegie Hall for her outstanding efforts in poetry among numerous awards in her youth. She is the 2018 New Youth Open Mic Slam Poetry Champion. In 2025, Akilah was nominated for the Emerging Leader award at the New Orleans Black Pride Awards. She is an alumnae of the A Studio in the Woods Replenish Residency and Rethink Revolutionary Artist Fellowship.

Tiny Worlds
This summer, Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center is turning small spaces into big imagination.
Join our community miniature art project and create your own 10”x10” miniature room, scene, or tiny world using paint, paper, fabric, found objects, miniatures, recycled materials, and whatever your imagination can dream up.
A haunted parlor. A dreamy studio apartment. A swamp witch kitchen. A record store. A world that exists nowhere else but in your mind.
No experience needed — just curiosity and creativity.
For six weeks, up to 20 participants will gather during open studio sessions to build their pieces, culminating in a public gallery exhibition of dozens of unique miniature environments. Room and some other supplies are included in the fee.

Celebrating National Haiku Poetry Day
Come out to mark the occasion with your own haikus! Not a poet? Then come and listen to the talented writers in our area as they share their work with you!
Improv Night
Do you enjoy being silly and laughing with friends? We do too! Whether you’ve done Improv before or this is your first time, we’d love to play pretend with you!
This group is for people who want to meet others through mutually imagined absurd scenarios. We’ll use exercises, games, and free form structures to explore our shared situational creativity. We’ll let our heavy identities rest for a moment and play as characters we just made up a second ago, all meeting for the first time.
Sound crazy yet?
We’ll create a container in which we trust each other and our intuitions to create story elements, and then revel in the hilarity that ensues. This is a space for kindness, trust, growth, and encouragement. This is not a space for judgement, rejection, or unkindness.
While we encourage everyone’s participation you will not be required to perform at all if the moment doesn’t strike you. It may not all make sense now, but if you have a gut feeling you’re down to clown, I encourage you to come! I’ll teach you and you’ll get it. Just say “yes, and!”
This event is for folks ages 18+
